Organic Butter Products Are Latest Food Recalled Due to Listeria

food recalls poisoning

Fears of contamination with both listeria and salmonella have caused numerous food recalls in the last few months, and the alerts show no signs of stopping. The most recent product to be the subject of a food recall are organic butter products distributed by Oskri Organics Corporation. The company announced that it is recalling both its tahini butter and sunflower butter products.

Unlike other food recalls that have raised concerns, the tahini butter and sunflower butters in question have not been linked to any consumer illnesses. According to a spokesperson for Oskri Organics, a customer notified them that they had identified Listeria monocytogenes in the product when they had tested it. It is unknown as to whether the client is a consumer or a business entity, but the company responded immediately following receiving notification of the problem on December 18th. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration made the recall public on January 2nd.

Source of Listeria Leading to Food Recall Unknown

According to a statement issued by Oskri, the company is uncertain as to the source of the contamination, but are investigating and have stopped all production and distribution pending the results of their inquiry. There is some concern about consumers using the product and whether there may be illnesses going forward, as listeria can take up to 70 days after exposure for symptoms to appear, and the peanut butter substitutes carry expiration dates that are more than a year away. The products were distributed in a dozen states, and some of the 16-ounce jars were sold direct to consumers on the internet.

Consumers who believe that they may have the products in their pantries can check the lot numbers that are on the top or bottom of the jars. Included in the recall are:

  • Oskri Organic Sunflower Butter with an expiration date of “10-2019” Lot # 099, and a UPC number of 666016401295
  • Oskri Tahini Butter marked with an expiration date of “1-2020” LOT # 193 and a UPC number of 666016401301
  • Thrive Sunflower Butter marked with an expiration date of “2-2020” LOT # 233 and a UPC number of 671635704825
