The Texas driver responsible for a fatal bicycle accident in East Austin has been charged with driving while intoxicated, but the biking community says that drivers need to be more careful at all times. Safety advocates are also pointing fingers at the city’s insufficient biking infrastructure as part of the problem.
Cycling is becoming more and more popular, and despite the risk of getting hurt in a bicycle accident, many people are using it as their primary source of transportation. This means that automobile drivers need to be particularly alert and responsible when they get behind the wheel. The Austin accident that claimed the life of 53-year old Charlie Bunton Jr. took place at 11:40 p.m. on a heavily trafficked highway.

Safety Advocates Say Better Infrastructure Would Result in Fewer Bicycle Accidents
The driver, 38-year old Joshua Brosemer, remained at the scene and waited for police to arrive. A local resident who witnessed the accident said, “It’s sad. We’ve seen accidents here before, but this is the first where somebody actually died. They were doing CPR on the guy right in the street here.”
Speaking of the accident, a spokesperson for local bicycle advocacy group Bike Austin says that had the city installed bike lanes, there would be far fewer bicycle accidents. “If we had a safer infrastructure, hopefully, we’d like to think the person would’ve been safe, but unfortunately since the driver was drunk, we really can’t make the decision.”
Drunk driving is a dangerous and negligent act that can lead to all types of tragedies. When a drunk driver hits a bicycle rider, the risk of death is magnified by the lack of protection available to the rider.
