Lipitor Lawsuit

Lipitor has been scientifically linked to an increased risk of developing diabetes in women. If you were diagnosed with diabetes while/after taking Lipitor, you may be eligible to file a Lipitor lawsuit and receive a financial settlement.

In 2012, the Big Pharma company Pfizer was instructed by the Food and Drug Administration to add a warning label onto one of its drugs. Lipitor’s label now carries a warning that the medication is associated with a significantly increased risk of diabetes.

However, Lipitor was (and still is) a popular medication for lowering cholesterol, so many people have been using it and unknowingly exposing themselves to type-2 diabetes. As a result, Lipitor lawsuits are being filed to hold Pfizer responsible for the suffering of diabetes patients.

Lipitor Side Effects

The drug atorvastatin is most commonly sold under the brand name Lipitor, and is used to lower high cholesterol in patients. Lipitor is manufactured and marketed by the Big Pharma giant Pfizer, and is one of the most popular cholesterol treatment drugs on the market. Atorvastatin is in the statin class of hypolipidemic drugs.

Lipitor is typically prescribed as a daily medication, with the dosage ranging from 10-80mg. The drug works by de-activating an enzyme in the liver to prevent the production of LDLs (low density lipids). LDLs are forms of cholesterol that tend to block arteries.

Pfizer sells Lipitor as a medication to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. Unfortunately, recent studies have shown that this drug can do more harm than good.

It has recently come to light that one of the Lipitor side effects is a significantly increased risk of developing type-2 diabetes. Since 2010, medical journals have been publishing studies that link Lipitor and diabetes, as well as cite new onset diabetes as a Lipitor side effect.

Lipitor and Diabetes

In recent years, several studies have been conducted to examine the link between Lipitor and diabetes in women and general patients.

In 2011 the Lancet study was published as a review of studies linking statin medications (such as Lipitor) to diabetes in patients. The study confirmed that patients who took Lipitor and other versions of atorvastatin had a significantly higher risk of developing type-2 diabetes while on their prescribed medication.

Two studies published in 2010 explored the association of Lipitor and diabetes. The JACC study results found that patients who took 80mg doses of Lipitor daily had a 37% increased risk of developing type-2 diabetes.

The Atherosclerosis study examined the metabolic effects of Lipitor and other statins. The study concluded that patients taking regular doses of the medication were at a dangerously high risk of new onset diabetes.

Lipitor and Diabetes in Women

In 2012 a study was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine journal which revealed that women 50-79 years old who took Lipitor (and similar statin drugs) are nearly 50% more likely to develop diabetes.
